A glimpse into the background of our speaker
Tapera Knox Chitiyo
Dr Knox Chitiyo is an Associate Fellow on the Chatham House Africa Programme, on which he primarily covers Zimbabwe, southern Africa and wider sub- Saharan Africa.
Knox is also the former Chair and current President of the Britain Zimbabwe Society. Prior to joining Chatham House, Knox was the Nelson Mandela Africa Fellow and Founder/ Head of the Africa Programme at the Royal United Services Institute[RUSI] in London.
Before coming to the UK in 2005, Knox was a Senior Lecturer in History and War Studies at the University of Zimbabwe and also taught at the Zimbabwe National Staff College, and at the Regional Peacekeeping Center in Harare.
Knox has also worked with SADC on regional integration, security and development; and also worked with the African Union in helping to develop the African maritime strategy. Knox has worked and published on African and broader global defence and security and development; and also on African diasporan issues [particularly UK and Europe-based African diasporic communities]. Knox has also been an international adviser to governments on regional and diasporan African issues.
Knox is also a regular commentator for African and global media on key events. In 2010 Knox won the inaugural BEN/Sky TV Award for International Diplomacy and he was a Nominee for the 2011 Zimbabwe Achievers Awards.
In 2015 he was mentioned among Diaspora Magazine's "Eminent UK- Based African Diasporans" . Knox is also on the Board of a number of international organisations including the Brenthurst Foundation and the Institute of Commonwealth Studies. He is also a former Board member of the global Mines Advisory Group
